Architectural Marvels: The Great Camps

The Adirondack Region's architectural magnificence owes much to its Great Camps. These historic retreats, constructed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, were lavish getaways for affluent families. Showcasing opulent designs that harmonize with the natural surroundings, they now provide a glimpse into a bygone era. Noteworthy Great Camps include:

  • Camp Sagamore: Built by Alfred Vanderbilt in the 1890s, it was later enjoyed by the Vanderbilt family and is now a public historic site.
  • White Pine Camp: Established in 1907 and once the summer residence of President Calvin Coolidge, it exudes timeless elegance.
  • Knollwood Club: Crafted by Archer Huntington in the early 1900s, it hosted gatherings of artists, writers, and musicians.
  • Camp Topridge: Created by Marjorie Merriweather Post, this luxurious retreat features lavish amenities like a bowling alley and Russian dacha.
  • Camp Wild Air: Constructed by Henry Graves Jr., president of Tiffany & Co., it's renowned for its stone boathouse, octagonal teahouse, and picturesque location on Upper St. Regis Lake.

So, whether you're drawn to the enchanting landscapes, the outdoor activities in the Ausable River Valley, or the architectural marvels of the Great Camps, the Adirondacks promise a journey rich in natural beauty, history, and adventure.

Retired here on Lake Clear, 20 mi. west of Placid. Have been coming since 1950 with Boy Scouts to Camp Askenonta on Lake Placid. Hiked all High Peaks when on that camp’s staff.
Now simply enjoying a spectacular part of our World!
